Mulch Planner is a small, independent site with free calculators and plain-English guides that help homeowners buy the right amount of mulch, soil and landscaping material — no more, no less.

How we work

• Math first. Every quantity comes from simple geometry: area × depth, with 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. We show the formula on every page so you can check it.
• Cited advice. Horticultural advice, such as recommended mulch depth or the 3-3-3 rule for trees, is taken from university extension services and linked at the point of use.
• No stale prices. Mulch prices vary by region and season, so our calculators let you enter your own local prices instead of quoting national averages.
• Independent. No brand pays for placement. If we ever add affiliate links or ads, they will be disclosed (see our affiliate disclosure).

Who writes the guides

Guides are produced by the Mulch Planner editorial team. Content is drafted with the help of AI tools, and every figure is recalculated with a script before it is published. Each guide shows the date it was last updated.
