How Much Does a Bag of Mulch Cover?
Short answer: a standard 2 cubic foot bag covers 12 square feet at 2 inches deep or 8 square feet at 3 inches deep. Coverage depends only on the bag's volume and the depth you spread it, so you can work it out for any bag.
Key takeaways
- A 2 cu ft bag covers 24 sq ft at 1 inch, 12 at 2 inches, 8 at 3 inches and 6 at 4 inches.
- Coverage = bag volume (cu ft) × 12 ÷ depth (inches).
- A 3 cu ft bag covers 18 sq ft at 2 inches or 12 at 3 inches. A 1.5 cu ft bag covers 9 or 6.
- Bags needed = area ÷ coverage per bag, rounded up. 100 sq ft at 3 inches takes 13 bags of 2 cu ft.
- When you compare bag sizes, compare price per cubic foot, not price per bag.
The formula
Coverage (sq ft) = bag volume (cu ft) × 12 ÷ depth (inches).
For a 2 cu ft bag at 3 inches: 2 × 12 ÷ 3 = 8 sq ft.
Coverage chart by bag size
| Depth | 1.5 cu ft bag | 2 cu ft bag | 3 cu ft bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 18 sq ft | 24 sq ft | 36 sq ft |
| 2 in | 9 sq ft | 12 sq ft | 18 sq ft |
| 3 in | 6 sq ft | 8 sq ft | 12 sq ft |
| 4 in | 4.5 sq ft | 6 sq ft | 9 sq ft |
How many bags do I need?
Divide your bed's area by the coverage per bag and round up. A 10 × 10 ft bed (100 sq ft) at 3 inches needs 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, so 13 bags of 2 cu ft.
| Area | 2 in deep (2 cu ft bags) | 3 in deep (2 cu ft bags) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 sq ft | 5 | 7 |
| 100 sq ft | 9 | 13 |
| 200 sq ft | 17 | 25 |
| 500 sq ft | 42 | 63 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 84 | 125 |

Same bed, different bag sizes
Stores stock 1.5, 2 and 3 cu ft bags side by side. This table shows how many of each you need for the same job, rounded up to whole bags:
| Job | Cubic feet | 1.5 cu ft bags | 2 cu ft bags | 3 cu ft bags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60 sq ft at 2 in | 10 | 7 | 5 | 4 |
| 120 sq ft at 3 in | 30 | 20 | 15 | 10 |
| 250 sq ft at 2 in | 41.67 | 28 | 21 | 14 |
| 250 sq ft at 3 in | 62.5 | 42 | 32 | 21 |
| 400 sq ft at 3 in | 100 | 67 | 50 | 34 |
Compare by the cubic foot. Divide each bag’s price by its volume. Two 3 cu ft bags hold the same 6 cu ft as three 2 cu ft bags, so the shelf price per bag alone tells you nothing.
Why your bags may cover less than the chart says
The chart is pure geometry. In a real bed, coverage usually comes in lower for a few reasons:
- Coarse mulch goes on thicker. University of Illinois Extension suggests 2–3 inches for composted materials but 3–4 inches for coarse mulches. At 4 inches a 2 cu ft bag covers only 6 sq ft.
- Uneven spreading. If the layer runs 4 inches in the middle and 2 at the edges, you have used the bag as if it were 3 inches all over.
- Dips and low spots. Hollows and soft soil take extra mulch before the surface looks even. Add 5–10%.
- Top-ups go further. If 1 inch of old mulch remains and you’re adding 2, each 2 cu ft bag covers 12 sq ft, not the 8 you’d get spreading 3 inches on bare soil.
Bags per cubic yard
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft, 9 bags of 3 cu ft or 18 bags of 1.5 cu ft. See how much a yard of mulch covers. If your total is several yards, check our bags vs bulk comparison.
Tips for accurate estimates
- Check the volume printed on the bag; sizes vary by brand.
- Measure irregular beds as a few rectangles and add them up.
- Add 5–10% for settling and uneven ground.
- Don't pile mulch deeper than you need — see the depth guide.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet does a 2 cubic foot bag of mulch cover?
A 2 cu ft bag covers 12 sq ft at 2 inches deep or 8 sq ft at 3 inches deep.
How many bags of mulch do I need for 100 square feet?
With 2 cu ft bags you need 9 bags at 2 inches or 13 bags at 3 inches. With 3 cu ft bags it is 6 or 9.
How much does a 3 cubic foot bag of mulch cover?
A 3 cu ft bag covers 36 sq ft at 1 inch, 18 sq ft at 2 inches, 12 sq ft at 3 inches and 9 sq ft at 4 inches.
How many bags of mulch do I need for a 4 × 8 bed?
A 4 × 8 ft bed is 32 sq ft. At 2 inches it needs 5.33 cu ft, or 3 bags of 2 cu ft. At 3 inches it needs 8 cu ft, or 4 bags.
How thick should I spread bagged mulch?
UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping recommends a 2- to 3-inch layer on plant beds, with at least 2 inches of space left around tree trunks. Our depth guide covers special cases.
